This site was created by James G., student of Cal State San Bernardino masters of TESOL graduate program, as a hypothetical high school ESL Webquest to fulfill a class assignment. However, it can be adapted by anyone for a variety of educational purposes without permission.
In this scenario, my San Bernardino high school ESL class has expressed an interest in the restaurant business. Many of them already hold jobs at local restaurants. Their English level is lacking the language to write essays and read novels. But in daily life, their language is only a few years behind their native classmates. This assignment will help to bridge the gap. Their background is varied, but there are a larger number of students from Spanish and French speaking countries, so this project gives them an opportunity to express and share their cultures in English. In addition to teaching them grammar, vocabulary and other traditional ESL topics, I want to make their learning experience more relevant and interesting to them. I have found a two week window and justified the project to my bosses by providing relevant learning standards (listed below). It is probable that at least a fraction of my students could later seek a career in the food industry. I want to make sure they have the English and critical thinking skills to navigate the 'ins and outs' of life in the industry. This activity aims to motivate the students by treating them like adults. As a result, it will make them aware of what it takes and advance their skills and confidence by leaps and bounds.
LEARNING STANDARDS
l Students adjust different points of view from various contexts to analyze, participate, and interpret in ways that meet future employment goals
l Students think creatively to construct knowledge and design products that integrate personal expression
l Students apply existing knowledge and interests to communicate many new ideas fluently to multiple audiences
